The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing the management of all Great Hearts Texas schools. They are charged with ensuring that the district and individual schools meet the educational needs of Great Hearts Texas’ students in accordance with its charter, Texas state laws, and regulations. The duties of the Board of Directors include but are not limited to:
• Determining the budget and overseeing financial management
• Hiring and evaluating the Superintendent
• Monitoring student performance and addressing faculty and staff needs
• Approving the school's curriculum and instruction program
• Final authority to hear or decide employee grievances, citizen complaints or parental concerns
The Board of Directors ensures fiscal responsibility by reviewing and approving budgets and investments, providing oversight of financial transactions, ensuring the district is compliant with all applicable laws, and regularly reviewing and updating financial policies. Additionally, the board seeks to ensure that Great Hearts Texas remains driven by its mission and goals, rather than solely focusing on financial objectives.
The Board of Directors assesses the district’s performance by reviewing a variety of quantitative and qualitative data, such as student enrollment and retention rates, test scores, teacher and staff evaluations, financial reports, and parent and student surveys and direct input. Additionally, the board can review the district’s annual improvement plan and measures. Board members may also use feedback from the Great Hearts Texas’ founders and external stakeholders, such as the school district, to assess performance. The board takes into account Great Hearts Texas’ mission, vision, and goals when evaluating school performance.
Directors serve without compensation for their services, although they may be reimbursed for all necessary and reasonable expenses of attending meetings and otherwise performing their duties.
A quorum is achieved when the majority of board members then in office are present. Every act or decision made by a majority of the directors present at a duly held meeting at which a quorum is present is regarded as an act of the board.
Regular Meetings of the Board are held at least once a quarter each calendar year. Special meetings of the Board may be held at any time or place and are called by the board chair, vice chair, or at the written request of three directors.
The Board of Directors must have a minimum number of three members and no more than seven members. Candidates for the board are usually identified by active board members or introduced to the board by Great Hearts Texas staff or supporters. The board seeks to have a well-rounded group of executive and academic leaders whose expertise supports and strengthens the management of Great Hearts Texas. Candidates are typically known to the board or a member of the board well in advance of consideration. Currently all members of the board had a prior relationship to Great Hearts Texas, its schools, and/or its leadership for multiple years prior to serving on the board. While the board does not formally consult parents, teachers, or school administrators in the selection process for new members, the input of all Great Hearts Texas stakeholders is welcomed and valued.
